Perry Creek Results |

Sampling in the Perry Creek floodplain in spring of 2010

Fish collected for chromium analysis in 2009

Collecting samples of groundwater discharging directly beneath Perry Creek in spring 2009
|
Perry Creek is a designated trout stream and a tributary of the Au Sable
River, which is a designated Scenic River under the Federal Wild and
Scenic Rivers Act. Perry Creek connects with the Au Sable River
approximately 2.5 miles south of the known Hoskins Manufacturing
groundwater contamination discharge area.
The DNRE investigation has revealed that the groundwater contamination
is flowing into Perry Creek. The portion of Perry Creek the groundwater
plume is discharging into is surrounded by a cedar swamp and thick
brushy vegetation, with no visible indication in the vegetation or in
the surface water that contamination is present. Laboratory analysis
indicates perchloroethylene (PCE), hexavalent chromium and chlorides are
entering into this groundwater-fed creek. Concentrations of PCE have
been detected in the groundwater as high as 500 parts per billion (most
protective state groundwater criteria is 5 parts per billion),
hexavalent chromium at 7,900 ppb (most protective state groundwater
criteria is 11 ppb) and chlorides at 448,000 ppb (most protective state
groundwater criteria is 250,000 ppb).
Due to dilution, the concentrations detected in the surface water of
Perry Creek is much lower than what is detected in the groundwater. The
average concentration of PCE detected in Perry Creek in the area of the
groundwater contamination plume discharge is 2 ppb (lowest surface water
criteria is 190 ppb based on effects to aquatic organisms), hexavalent
chromium at 8 ppb (lowest surface water criteria is 11 ppb based on
effects to aquatic organisms) and chloride at 18,000 ppb (there is no
state surface water criteria for chloride). Contamination from Hoskins
Manufacturing is detectable in Perry Creek, however there has been no
indication that aquatic life has been acutely harmed by the
contaminants.
|
As indicated on the following table, low level concentrations of PCE and
hexavalent chromium are detected in PC-03 in the area the groundwater
plume discharges to surface water. PCE is also detected downstream in
PC-07; however, contamination has not been detected in Perry
Creek
where it intersects with
McKinley Road (PC-MCK).
